In media of the new millennium, the world is beginning to notice a thin line between what is considered the look and sound of a Christian and a Secular Artist. To some this may be deemed blasphemous or luke warm behavior, due to the notion that Christians are to be set apart and contrary to the mannerisms of a secular world. From a face value perspective, this conclusion can be drawn, but as the famous saying goes “you can’t judge a book by its cover.” Its as you turn the pages of the books contents, where a considerate interpretation can be drawn.

Without fear of losing their sting, artists such as Israel Houghton, Kim Burrell, Fireflight, and Trip-Lee aren’t afraid to wear a transparent jacket of their faith. One may misinterpret transparency as non-existing, but even an invisible person still takes up space in a room. The concept of the transparent jacket is that it is see through, while still keeping its wearer warm, and their inner contents in good condition, all while provoking interest of a potential reader. In other words, the New Millennium Christian Artist doesn’t deny their faith but spends a balanced portion of their time being transparent, and this allows the contents of their life (ie pages) to be read by viewers or audiences without quick resignation.

In recent media headlines, we find Artists such as Israel Houghton, or even rock band Fireflight being key contributors on nationally syndicated television shows. Israel Houghton who just released a new album titled “Love God, Love People” has gained the name for himself of pushing the envelope when it comes to fusing genres of music and leaving his fingerprint on what He produces. He has found a way to be relevant in the eyes of his audience, while still holding true to his undeniable faith. This is seen this past week when Israel and his team were found playing as part of the house band on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” The message of “Love God, Love People” has taken a relevant social perspective, allowing people to see that everyone needs Love, and through action everyone can give it without reservation. Israel is definitely walking on shaky ground at first glance, but if you look even closer you’ll find He is walking firmly, and spreading the good news of the gospel to audiences that may have once been unreachable.

Fireflight, a Christian Rock Band, found their music being the theme song to NBC’s television drama “Bionic Woman,” this was played every time the showed aired. The track was entitled “Unbreakable.” With the edgy bands leader being a female, and the title of their hit track, Fireflight definitely became a good fit for the shows concept of a woman empowerment. Other Artists are seen stepping out in the same way, Trip-Lee, Christian Hip-Hop Artist, had his song featured on BET’s infamous 106 & Park video countdown, as well as Gospel Singer Kim Burrell singing tribute at "BET Honors 2010" to secular phenomenon Whitney Houston, who has roots in the church herself.

These artists are again pushing the boundaries of what was once considered a no go, for a Christian, period. Their main goal is to, of course, show the Love of Christ but moreso show the lifestyle that can be lived as you walk their walk of faith. Wearing their Transparent Jacket of Faith, more people are noticing that even though their faith can’t be seen right off the back, it can definitely be felt as they are in the Artists presence long enough. Who knows this may be the door that provokes people to give Faith a try...
